Dallas Bar Association Hosts Mock Voir Dire

What:     Nearly 400 Dallas Independent School District high school students will be treated to a demonstration of the selection of a jury and the voir dire process by several of Dallas’ finest trial lawyers and judges. The DBA Law Day Committee, chaired by Mandy Childs, of Jones Day, sponsors the event, which demonstrates the process and importance of the selection of a “fair and impartial jury,” using a panel of the students for a hypothetical civil or criminal trial. Following the demonstration, the high school students were given an opportunity to ask questions of the lawyers and judges.

Beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Central Jury Room students will witness a moderated panel discussion with participants Theresa Daniels, Dallas County Commissioner; Wade Emmert, Republican Party County Chair; Senator Royce West; Miguel Solis, Dallas ISD Board Trustee; and Judge Martin Hoffman, 68th District Court, Moderator.

Following the panel discussion, students will disperse to one of five courtrooms for the Mock Voir Dire presentation. Judges participating include: Hon. Mark Greenberg, Hon. David L. Horan, Hon. Irma Ramirez and Hon. Jeffrey Rosenfeld. Attorneys include: Stephanie Baenisch, Brian Loncar & Associates;Ophelia Camina, Susman Godfrey L.L.P.;Leon Carter, Carter Scholer Arnett Hamada & Mockler;William Clay, The Willis Law Group;Dash Cooper, Jones Day;Krisi Kastl, Kastl Law, P.C.; John Langdoc, Baron & Budd, P.C.;Robert Tobey, Johnston Tobey;Mark Werbner,Sayles Werbner, PC;andPatrick Wigle, Turley Law Firm.


Why:  This event is part of recognizing Law Day, which is celebrated each spring in bar associations across the country. This year’s theme is “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters.” One of the goals of Law Day is to assure that today’s youth are equipped with the understanding and the skills necessary to effectively function within our country’s democracy. Law Day also teaches the youth of today to become engaged in the law and to consider how the law can better serve the needs and interests of the people. Students from 12 Dallas ISD high schools will be in attendance, including Skyline, Prestonwood Christian Academy, Judge Barefoot Sanders Law Magnet and many more.
