Dallas Bar Association

Labor & Employment Law Section

Provides a forum for employment law practitioners to study employment law issues as well as to meet and mingle with other employment law attorneys. The Section holds monthly CLE meetings, an evening seminar dealing with a specific area of employment law, and organizes social events including a reception for judges.

Meeting Schedule:

The Section hosts monthly CLE luncheons at the Belo at noon on the third Monday of each month.

Please note, however, that there will be no section luncheons in December and January.

Please join us for the upcoming Annual Employment Law Update given by Mark Shank and Hal Gillespie.  This year's annual presentation will be at 5:30pm on November 12, 2014.  The event will cost $20 per attendee (cash or check).  There will be appetizers and a cash bar.  The always entertaining and informative evening event will receive 1.5 hours CLE credit.  No RSVP or registration is necessary to attend this event and all are welcome to attend.

At noon on Monday, September 16th, that you won't want to miss.   We will have a panel discussion on independent contractor misclassification that will include a discussion of the Department of Labor’s recent initiatives, as well as trends and strategies for prosecuting and defending claims in this very hot area of litigation.  The panel will include Derek Braziel of Lee & Braziel, LLP, James Culp of the Department of Labor Regional Solicitor, Region VI (Dallas) and Rob Friedman of Littler Mendelson, P.C.  We hope to see you there!

Mediation Volunteer Program:

The Employment Law Section of the Dallas Bar Association offers a mediation volunteer program to both state and federal courts. The program provides a volunteer attorney to “assist and advise” a pro se plaintiff and a volunteer mediator who donate their time for a “one-time” mediation. The program has been operating successfully for a number of years, and is in dire need of volunteer attorneys to “assist and advise” the pro se plaintiffs and of mediators to conduct the mediation sessions.

Will you please participate in our program? Participation means we will add you to our list and call you on a rotating basis. With enough volunteers, it is unlikely we would call more than once a year. You may decline if we call. If you accept, we provide information for a conflict check.

If you are willing to participate, please email Sandra K. Lauro at sandy.lauro@sjmneuro.com and please copy on the email Emily Thompson at emilythompson@andrewskurth.com. Emily Thompson is a paralegal at Andrews & Kurth who has graciously helped administer this program since its inception. Please indicate whether you would like to volunteer as an attorney to represent a pro se plaintiff or as a mediator (volunteering as a mediator requires some mediation experience). Also, be sure to provide your contact information, including your office address, office telephone number and any other numbers where you can be reached.

An overview of the Mediation Volunteer Program is available on this site under Section Downloads. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for your consideration!

Best Regards,

Sandra K. Lauro
